What if you cannot remember an exact travel date?

Do not turn an uncertain date into a confident guess. Mark the gap, compare independent records, and retain the source that supports the date you eventually use.

The problem is uncertainty, not memory

A blank period often creates pressure to choose a date that “looks right.” That is the wrong goal. A useful reconstruction keeps known dates, uncertain dates, and supporting sources visibly separate until the evidence is strong enough to close the gap.

Illustrative scenario

One weekend disappeared between two calendars.

Maya remembers driving to Buffalo in autumn. Her passport has no stamp, the hotel receipt shows Saturday, and a photo is dated Sunday. Instead of inventing the border dates, she records the trip as unresolved and works outward from the evidence.

Use a source-first recovery order

  1. Build the known timeline first. Enter trips with reliable departure and return dates before investigating gaps.
  2. Flag uncertainty. Keep a short list of periods that still need verification.
  3. Check primary records. Review current and expired passports, airline or rail accounts, booking emails, and official travel-history sources.
  4. Check independent secondary records. Calendars, geotagged photos, card transactions, roaming records, work schedules, and school records can narrow a period.
  5. Resolve one gap at a time. Record which source supports the final date so it can be reviewed later.

Avoid three common mistakes

Application check: Follow the current IRCC application guide and official calculator. If the missing period could affect eligibility or involves an exception, obtain advice from a licensed professional.

Official starting point: CBSA information sources and travel-history records.
