Does an expired PR card cancel permanent resident status?
No. IRCC states that card expiry does not itself end PR status. If you are outside Canada and need to return on a commercial carrier, check the current PRTD route before arranging travel.
The airport check-in problem
The card is expired. The status and the boarding document are different questions.

- An expired PR card does not, by itself, end permanent resident status.

- A PR card cannot be issued and delivered overseas simply to let someone return; apply for a new card after returning to Canada.
Build the travel-history file before submitting
Make one chronological list of exits and returns, including same-day trips. Mark every uncertain date instead of filling it with a guess. Compare the list with passports, booking emails, calendars and any available border records, then follow the current IRCC PRTD instructions for required evidence.
